Heating and Electricity from Landfill Fuel
Environment:
• Carbon neutral meaning no additional carbon dioxide is added to the atmosphere
• Reduce the nuisance factor of landfills
We have a power plant we call the “Buzzard” that produces hot water for building heat and electricity. The burner is a gasifier / incinerator that can burn a wide range renewable, and fossil fuels, however, the emphasis is on burning renewable fuels. Hot water is piped under floors for building heat, and is used as the energy source for a turbine that generates electricity. The electricity generated is either 120 kiloWatts, or 250 kiloWatts from one Buzzard. Multiple Buzzards can produce higher more power.
Generating our own power and heat for our greenhouses and buildings is a new, unique, and profitable combination. The Buzzard provides energy independence to our greenhouses. It helps to control our production costs and keep our produce affordable.
Landfill, or garbage can be used as a fuel source. Its cheap, abundant, available, and reliable. Other fuel sources are agricultural plant waste, manures, and wood waste. The fuel is sorted at the landfill, and shredded where necessary. All fuels are pressed into bales. The fuel bales are wrapped in a plastic cover and delivered to the Buzzard where they will burn pollution free, and provide heat.
There are overlapping benefits to all involved:
Saladacres:
• Low costs of heating in winter months
• Low costs of electricity for cooling and electric motors in the growing of crops
• Lower costs of production that will mean lower costs of crops grown in
greenhouses
• Income from Carbon credits that will offset the cost of sorting and delivery
• Income from the sale of electricity
• Fuel bales are stored on site ready for use – odorless, clean, white, fuel bales
• Bales are clean, weatherproof, and dry
Town:
• Delivery of low cost electricity
• Possible delivery of heat for district heating
• Jobs in sorting and delivery
Electric Utility:
• Income from the distribution of electricity
Landfill:
• Extension of the life of the landfill by reducing the amount to be disposed by up to 90%
• Elimination of the cost of delivering paper and cardboard to recycle depots from the landfill site
• Income from recovered metals
• Cleaner landfill
• Sorting jobs at landfill
Environment:
• Carbon neutral meaning no additional carbon dioxide is added to the atmosphere
